How to Read This List
Last checked May 27, 2026Traits are role-based, not one-size-fits-all
The best trait depends on what the unit actually does. Raw damage traits are best on limited carry units, DoT traits belong on damage-over-time units, and economy traits only matter on farm units.
- Carry DPS: prioritize high damage, cooldown, and range scaling.
- DoT units: prioritize traits that extend or multiply burn, bleed, poison, or stack uptime.
- Support/farm: damage traits are usually wasteful; utility or economy matters more.
- Verification note: this guide combines in-site calculator assumptions with public UTDX trait and tier discussions from current community trackers.
Verification note: current unit role and build context was checked against Pro Game Guides and Destructoid. Trait recommendations here are role-based community guidance, not an official developer ranking.
Best Trait by Unit Role
Quick PickMain carry DPS
Target: Ruler. Stop at Sacred or Duelist if the unit is not your permanent endgame carry.
DoT or stack units
Target: Astral. It is best when the unit wins through burn, bleed, poison, or long uptime windows.
Boss killer
Target: Duelist or Ruler. Pick this route when the unit exists mainly to delete raid bosses or final waves.
Farm unit
Target: Fortunate. Damage traits are usually not worth premium rerolls on economy slots.
Support and control
Target: cooldown, range, or Fission-style utility. The right utility trait can beat raw damage.
Temporary progression unit
Target: Sacred or any useful S/A tier trait. Save rare rerolls for units that will stay on your account.
Best Trait Targets
Priority PicksRuler
The safest top-end trait for one-slot carries and boss killers. Use it when the unit's value is mostly direct damage rather than DoT uptime or economy.
Astral
A premium trait only when the unit wins through burn, bleed, poison, or long stack windows. Do not blindly chase it on every DPS unit.
Eternal
Strong when a run lasts long enough for scaling to matter. It is less attractive for short story clears where front-loaded damage wins.
Fortunate
High value on farm/economy units because it improves the speed of your setup rather than the damage number on one tower.
Duelist
Excellent on single-target units when a raid or boss stage is the reason you are rerolling. It is less important for general wave clear.
Sacred
A strong practical trait when you need to stop spending. Keep it on most progression units unless you are building a top permanent carry.
Complete Trait Rankings
UPD 3.25| Tier | Trait | Best Use | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSS | Ruler | Main DPS, limited placement carries | Best general high-end damage trait when the unit scales from raw hits. |
| SSS | Astral | DoT, stack, infinite scaling units | Top tier only on units that convert uptime into damage. Overrated on plain hitters. |
| SS | Eternal | Infinite mode and extended fights | Excellent for long fights; weaker if the stage ends before scaling pays off. |
| SS | Fortunate | Farm and economy units | Best economy trait. Do not compare it directly to DPS traits. |
| S | Duelist | Boss pressure, single-target carries | Strong when the unit's job is deleting bosses rather than clearing waves. |
| S | Sacred | Generalist DPS and progression | Reliable stop point if you are low on rerolls. Good enough for most content. |
| S | Fission | Debuff spread, multi-hit utility | Great when extra hits spread slows, breaks, burns, or debuffs. |
| A | Sniper / Range traits | Map coverage, awkward placements | Useful for quality of life and full-map coverage, but rarely best-in-slot. |
| A | Cooldown traits | Shield breaking, proc-heavy kits | Better on units with important procs than on simple damage dealers. |
| B | Basic damage traits | Early game placeholders | Acceptable while leveling, but reroll once you are investing in endgame units. |
Reroll Plan
PracticalUse a different stopping rule depending on the unit's importance.
- Meta carry: chase Ruler, Astral, Eternal, or another role-perfect trait.
- Useful support: stop at Sacred, Fission, cooldown, or range if it helps the kit.
- Farm unit: chase Fortunate or keep resources for a stronger carry.
- Temporary unit: do not burn premium rerolls unless it clears content you are stuck on.
Trait rerolls are most valuable when the unit is already good enough to use in hard content.
- First priority: one main carry for Infinite, raids, and hard story stages.
- Second priority: a boss killer if your main carry lacks single-target pressure.
- Third priority: your main farm unit if you still do not have Fortunate.
- Low priority: collection units, temporary Mythics, and units you do not place often.
UTDX update codes often include trait rerolls, relic rerolls, and gems. Claim those before spending long-term savings.
- Check the Universal Tower Defense X codes page.
- Redeem reroll-heavy update codes first because they may expire faster than normal rewards.
- Spend the new rerolls on one target unit at a time instead of spreading them across your roster.
Trait Reroll Resource Priority
Save or Spend| Situation | Recommended Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You pulled a top Secret carry | Spend until role-perfect or strong S tier | One great trait can affect every hard mode run. |
| You only have temporary progression units | Stop at Sacred, Fission, range, or cooldown | Saving rerolls is better than perfecting a unit you will replace. |
| You are stuck on economy | Target Fortunate on your farm unit | Faster upgrades can matter more than one extra damage trait. |
| You are preparing for raids | Prioritize Ruler, Duelist, or Sacred on boss DPS | Raid checks punish weak single-target damage. |
