Story Mode Method

Last checked May 26, 2026

Story mode rewards clean roles over pure rarity

A strong story team clears waves quickly, covers air or hill lanes, and has enough economy to upgrade before bosses arrive. The best unit is the one that fills your missing role, not always the rarest unit.

  • Main carry: hybrid or high-damage DPS that can handle most waves.
  • Hill / air coverage: prevents flying enemies from leaking while your ground DPS scales.
  • Farm: gets your carry upgraded before boss waves.
  • Support: range, damage, slow, stun, or cooldown help when raw DPS is not enough.

Verification note: role labels and public unit context were checked against current UTDX tier lists from Pro Game Guides, Beebom, and Destructoid.

Best Story Team Template

6 Slots
1

Main Carry

Hybrid / boss DPS

Use your strongest hybrid or boss-killing unit here. This unit gets early upgrades and handles most enemy waves.

Examples: Dragon Warlord, Dragon Girl, Gluttonous Warlord
2

Hill / Air DPS

Flying enemy coverage

Story maps punish teams that cannot hit flying enemies. Bring a hill or long-range unit if your carry lacks coverage.

Examples: Sharpshooter King, strong hill DPS
3

Farm

Upgrade tempo

Economy is the difference between scraping by and clearing comfortably. Upgrade farm early, then funnel into carry DPS.

Trait: Fortunate when available
4

Support / Control

Slow, stun, buff

Use this slot to fix your map problem: range buffs for awkward maps, stuns for fast waves, or slows for boss lanes.

Examples: Lulu-style utility, buffers, slows

Progression Plan

Beginner Friendly
1
Upgrade order matters more than flexing rarity
  • Early waves: place one cheap DPS and start farm upgrades.
  • Mid waves: upgrade the main carry before spreading money across every slot.
  • Air waves: add hill coverage before the first flying wave reaches your base.
  • Boss waves: use support/control near the longest path section to buy more hit time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Secret units to clear story mode?
No. Secrets help, but a balanced team with farm, hill coverage, and a well-upgraded carry can clear a lot of story content.
What is the biggest beginner mistake?
Over-spreading upgrades. One strong upgraded carry usually beats five weak units.
Should I bring farm to every story map?
Usually yes once you have a reliable farm unit. Short early maps may not need it, but hard stages usually do.
